Communal violence smouldered East Pakistan in the 60s, forcing Hindu families, including that of freedom fighter NIMAI, to set on a perilous journey to India, where his daughter ASHIMA goes missing. In Tripura, indigenous villagers, headed by DAISHAMONI, shelter them. Nimai teaches the children, and over time, his son ATUL falls in love with KUMPHUI, Daishamoni’s daughter. They marry, despite resentment from her brother. Some misguided youth take up arms, alarmed at altered demographics due to influx of Hindus from Bangladesh Nimai and his wife KHUSHIBALA still pine for Ashima. Atul chances upon his lost sister Ashima, now Amina Begum. Their happiness is fleeting, as Nimai can’t accept Amina, only to regret later. In a tragic turn, militants gun down Khushibala, Atul gets kidnapped, tortured to death despite Nimai managing a ransom. A shattered Nimai must leave the village with a pregnant Fulmoti, uprooted once more in search of safety.
